Rhiannon Giddens at The Mercury Ballroom
Rhiannon Giddens is the founding member of the Grammy-winning country, blues, and old-time music band, Caroline Chocolate Drops. Now she has spread her wings and used her soulful voice to launch a debut solo album,Tomorrow Is My Turn. Rhiannon will perform live along with members of the Louisville Orchestra, at the Mercury Ballroom on September 17. During five songs of Rhiannon's set, a quartet ensemble from the Louisville Orchestra will accompany her on stage to transform her songs in to a symphonic sound that has not been heard before. This one time only performance is a chance to see and hear incredible loca ltalent intertwine with a world renowned female artist who has deep roots in music of various genres.
On her Nonesuch solo debut Tomorrow Is My Turn, Giddens and T Bone Burnett revisit an Odetta-arranged work-song rhythm, “Water Boy", where Giddens delivers an equally thunderous rendition. One made all the more striking when placed between a gentle, ruminative interpretation of Dolly Parton’s “Don’t Let It Trouble Your Mind” and a version of Hank Cochran’s “She’s Got You,” popularized by Patsy Cline, that Giddens imbues with “an old-timey R&B vibe,” abetted by Carolina Chocolate Drops band-mate Hubby Jenkins. The breadth of musical vision on Tomorrow Is My Turn incorporates gospel, jazz, blues, and country, plus a hint of proto-rock and roll, and Giddens displays an emotional range to match her dazzling vocal prowess throughout. With the addition of an extraordinarily talented orchestra section, this performance is sure be heartfelt and memorable.Tickets are $25 in advance.
