The English Beat at The Mercury Ballroom Saturday, November 28th, 2015
The English Beat rushed on to the music scene in 1979. It was a time of social, political, and musical upheaval and The Beat injected messages of love and unity, set to a great dance beat that crossed over fluidly between Soul, Reggae, Pop , and Punk. The band toured the world with such artists as David Bowie, The Police, REM, The Clash, Talking Heads, The Pretenders, and The Specials. Members of The English Beat moved in different directions after the release of their third album. Guitarist, Andy Cox and bassist, David Steele recruited Roland Gift and formed Fine Young Cannibals, while Dave Wakeling and Ranking Roger formed General Public.
Saxaphone Ska legend, Saxa and Everett Morton put together International Beat, that not only toured worldwide, but included cameos from Dave and Roger. Combined, all of these bands scored multi-platinum record sales, sold out shows all over the world, and, most importantly, maintained universal fan approval because they kept The Beat alive! The band reunited in February 2003 for a UK tour and now, showman Dave Wakeling is bringing an all-star Ska band to Louisville to play all of the hits from The Beat and General Public. Saturday, November 28th will be a high-energy, 80s throwback dance party that you will not want to miss. You just can't stop The Beat!
