The Nutcracker at the Lancaster Theatre
This world-class dance troupe brings one of the most iconic ballets of all time to audiences in Central Kentucky. The Nutcracker two-act ballet first premiered in Russia in 1892 and has since evolved into an American phenomenon that is now a fundamental part of the holiday season. The story begins on Christmas Eve and involves a Christmas tree, children, parents, toys, snow and sweets. And, of course, the score is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular compositions, universally acknowledged as having achieved classic status.
The Rudolf Nureyev State Ballet Theatre is a 50 member company that was founded in Russia in 1938. Rudolf Nureyev, one of the most famous dancers of the Twentieth Century, took the first steps of his storied career as a member of this group in 1953. Among the new breed of Russian ballet academies and companies, the principal dancers are laureates, diploma and competition-winners of Russian and international competitions and have trained in St. Petersburg, the Bolshoi Ballet, Mariinsky Ballet, Grogorovich Ballet, Russian Ballet directed by V. Gordeyev, Cairo Ballet, and the Tchaikovsky Ballet Theatre. The company has performed in 12 countries outside of Russia since 1995, and this represents their fifth U.S. tour.
Generations of children and “children at heart” have treasured this perpetual favorite featuring authentic Russian chorography as performed by Moscow’s famous Bolshoi Ballet and set to Tchaikovsky’s beloved music including “Waltz of the Flowers”, “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy”, and “Waltz of the Snowflakes”. The entire family will love this magical experience filled with spectacular sets and beautiful costumes as dancers take to the stage. It is a not to be missed experience and the perfect way to celebrate the Christmas season with friends and loved ones. – another Lancaster Grand Theatre holiday tradition!
