The annual Festival of Learnshops in Berea gets better every year! For 2013 sessions are available in everything from banjo playing to bonsai. Just consider the diversity of classes in painting, pastels, and printmaking!
If you like the spontaneity and freshness of watercolor, there are classes by three of Kentucky’s most renowned watercolorists. Pat Banks, whose work appears in galleries and public buildings across the Commonwealth, will lead three sessions: “Watercolor Gardenscapes,” “Watercolor Waterscapes” and “Watercolor Trees.” All three sessions allow beginners to experienced watercolor artists to take their art to the next level.
Dinah Tyree’s session, “Beginning Watercolor,” will introduce you to the basics of watercolor from how different paints react on different types of paper to brush handling techniques (and even when to use your finger instead of a brush!). Her sessions on “Watercolor Skies,” “Watercolor Seas” and “Watercolor Landscapes” explore these individual subjects in more depth.
Judy Mudd’s “Painting Children’s Portraits in Watercolor” is a three-day class aimed at watercolorists at the intermediate level, while her two-day class, “Watercolor Landscapes with Simple Buildings” is for both beginning and intermediate level. Her paintings have been juried into national and international exhibits and can be viewed online at her website, JudyMudd.com, online galleries such as DailyPaintWorks.com and at various gallery venues.
If you prefer acrylics, you have two options. Debbie Jackson Wagers’ “Expressionistic Acrylic Painting” is designed as an opportunity to experiment with abstract expressionism using a variety of playful techniques such as stamping, etching, brushwork, spattering, and dripping to create multiple layers of texture and color with liquid and soft body acrylics.
Neil Di Teresa, Professor Emeritus of painting and drawing at Berea College, will help you to “Complete a Landscape Painting in Six Hours.” Participants will experience drawing and painting layout processes on canvas, color mixing, brush handling, and multiple painting techniques using acrylics. (Di Teresa also has a Learnshop on drawing techniques.)
Or you might want to create a landscape using pastels. Diana Colgate will provide a step-by-step approach for creating a beautiful landscape working from a photo reference. This technique will help you quickly achieve stunning results in her class “Pastel Landscape in a Day.” For a more in-depth experience, you can take her course, “Pastel Landscapes: Three-Day Class.” Diana is an award winning artist and a juried member of several organizations, including the Kentucky Guild of Artist and Craftsmen and the Kentucky Crafted Program.
For those who want to pursue printmaking, Marta Dorton’s “ Printmaking: Monotype and Monoprint” is a great introduction to printmaking or an interesting approach for experienced printmakers. Marta is also an exhibiting member of the Kentucky Guild of Artists and Craftsmen and the Kentucky Crafted program.
All of these Learnshops – and many, many more – will take place in Berea between July 13 and July 28. This event has become so popular that a few sessions are already sold out! For more information and to register, go to www.berea.com and click on Festival of Learnshops.
