SummerStage is a collaboration between visual and performing arts that exemplifies JSP's mantra of being a place where art meets the earth. VanHouten Ellis select a script that complements the outdoor amphitheatre (surrounded by native grasses & trees); the natural environment is paramount. Additionally, a sculpture is commissioned and integrated into the production as the focal point. The creative team (25-30 artists, actors and designers) produces 6 performances in June annually.
Over its 4-year history, the productions have all been Shakespearean. They create professional productions of a classic author that rural audiences would otherwise have to drive 40-50 miles to see. The regional company is drawn from professional theater artists, providing them with paid summer employment. The program is committed to casting student actors from the Frankfort area who work alongside these professional actors.
