LAL Currents: Horror Amour
On Saturday, April 18, LAL will be presenting two guided tours, a family-focused tour from 11AM - 1PM, and a Spanish-language tour starting at 1PM.
Throughout history, cultures have demonstrated aesthetic preferences on how their personal space is occupied. Imagine the suffocating space of the Book of Kells, the cluttered interiors of the Victorians, even the busyness of Where's Waldo books. Horror Vacui refers to extreme cases of dense imagery. It is a term coined by Italian art critic Mario Praz and literally means fear of emptiness. Amor Vacui, its antithesis, refers to a love of emptiness.
Artists were handed the challenge of constructing their own visual propensity based on these two extremes while trying to stay out of the middle.
