Mom's Gift at Pioneer Playhouse
Pioneer Playhouse of Danville, Kentucky’s oldest outdoor theatre, continues its 67th season under the stars with Mom’s Gift, an uplifting contemporary comedy starring Playhouse veteran actors and audience favorites, Patricia Hammond and Eben French Mastin.
At the start of Mom’s Gift, set in present-day suburban Minnesota, Mom’s ghost (Hammond) appears at her husband (Mastin’s) birthday party nearly a year after her sudden death, and she’s on a mission. Just like Clarence in the movie classic, It’s a Wonderful Life, Mom must accomplish a task in order to “earn her wings.” What that task is, however, isn’t clear, and things are made more complicated by the fact that the only person who can hear or see Mom is her oldest daughter, Kat, played by Erika S. Lee, who has been ordered by the court to spend Dad’s birthday with him as part of her Anger Management Program. One by one the family’s secrets are peeled away revealing a unique twist that surprises even our ghost.
Mom’s Gift was written by Phil Olson, author of the comedy, A Nice Family Gathering, which was a huge hit with Playhouse audiences several years ago. “This new play is a terrific story, literally bursting with heart,” says Managing Director, Heather Henson, who runs the historic theatre along with her brother, Robby, and mother, Charlotte. “We chose Mom’s Gift because Olson’s last play was such a success for us – it really touched people in a meaningful way. Also we knew the lead roles were perfect for Pat and Eben, two of our finest actors, two of our biggest stars. The play is funny, but it also speaks to the heart and soul. Bring a Kleenex or two – you’ll need it! This is definitely our ‘feel good’ play of the summer.”
Mom’s Gift opens on June 28 and will run through July 9. Shows are performed nightly, Tuesdays through Saturdays, at 8:30 pm. A home-cooked Kentucky Proud dinner featuring slow-smoked BBQ pulled pork or chicken, and farm-fresh sides, is served at 7:30 pm each evening before the show. (Vegetarian option is available if ordered 24 hours in advance.) A bar serving wine, beer and mixed drinks is open for those 21 and over. Reservations are recommended for the show, required for dinner. (Dinner & Show: $32; Show Only: $18.)
Pioneer Playhouse is located at 840 Stanford Road in Danville, Kentucky.
Shows are held outside in a historic amphitheater, but moved indoors in case of rain or extreme heat.
