Parsing Illusions, works by Berthold Marckwardt
Note: exhibit contains some mature content.
From Berthold Marckwardt: When I started thinking about this show I was encountering a lot of frustration with basic communication and how no matter where I turned this issue was underlined, highlighted, and starred. It centers on language and how language is not always aligned between two people all the time, even though what they are saying is exactly the same thing. The show is in three sections. The first section is an extension of a writing project. I developed a series of captions describing something in a photograph of an object, action, or scene that I take. The second section, Skin, began as the documentation of the thoughts, label, and ideas of myself, however fleeting, throughout a day. Finally, section three is the Fantasy Lovers: A Catfishing Tale. Fantasy Lovers is curated piece, but the common foundation that in my fantasies I am never me.
There will be special activities during the opening to celebrate Pique’s first anniversary. Bring a team and compete in our cake painting contest, add your mark on our community wall art project, and enjoy a special performance by Robin Alicia-Clare Hoskins.
About the artist: Berthold Marckwardt is a designer, a visual linguist, that seeks to inject a breath into the construct of his surroundings. Creating a space that allows for margins, in order to develop a freshness- a permutation. Berthold is focused on identity, place, categorization and their inevitable breakdown. He is interested in the connections of imagery and ideas without an explicit appeasing commentary explaining the linkage. Transitions are fake. He works in fracture. Exploring the I in me, in him, in you, in we. Berthold Marckwardt received his Master of Design in Fashion, Body and Garment from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Bachelor of Arts in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. He moonlights in the day as a fashion designer in New York.
Pique is located at 210 Pike Street, Covington, KY. The space is an open ended art experiment. The common denominator is that workshops, classes, and events take place frequently in the context of 6 exhibitions that inhabit the space over 12 months. Through our events we create opportunities, connections, and funding for artists and the community. We hope to blow your mind through our challenging exhibitions, workshops, lectures, classes, and events throughout the year. Stop by often because our community gallery will frequently change, and maybe surprise you.
