Brigitte Nguyen made the move from California to Lexington for love—in more ways than one. It was after meeting her now-husband, Michael Prather, that Brigitte decided to trade in her calculator (she worked as an accountant for many years) and her Walnut Creek, Calif. ZIP code for a chef’s hat and a home in the Bluegrass State.
“For all of my life, I’ve been obsessed with food,” writes Brigitte on her website, brigittenguyen.com. “I chose Julia Child and Yan Can Cook over Saturday morning cartoons. I picked my mom’s cookbooks and issues of Gourmet over novels and gossip magazines.”
Brigitte graduated from Sullivan University in 2008 and began working in area restaurants, including Ouita Michel’s Holly Hill Inn in Midway. She also satiated her competitive streak by entering national cooking competitions and landed the runner-up spot in both Sutter Home’s “Build a Better Burger” contest and Food Network’s Ultimate Recipe Showdown. It was her appearance on Ultimate Recipe Showdown that led to a meeting with Food Network programming execs and a gig as host of the Cooking Channel’s From the Kitchens Of …, as well as a contributor to the network’s Unique Sweets.
Kentucky foodies are fortunate to have Brigitte all to themselves, though, when she highlights ingredients from across the Commonwealth as host of The Kentucky Proud Kitchen. Each week, Brigitte shares fast, easy recipes featuring locally grown products. The show airs on Lexington’s WDKY/FOX 56 Sundays at 11:30 a.m.; at 8 a.m. Sunday mornings on WBKO in Bowling Green; on Louisville’s WLKY Sundays at noon; and on the Me-TV network in Louisville Saturdays at 11 a.m.
